One of the OG Cantonese-style restaurants in China, this place has been serving simple, traditional banquet-style menus to much satisfaction. This Cantonese parlour draws in a huge crowd, and the buzzing service here gets the job done. The quality draws me back for gatherings and big events and walking in through the shiny glossy staircase make for a grand entrance decades ago. The portion here come in plenty, and when the sauce counts, the sweet and sour pork ribs bring in a flood of deliciousness that seeped into the tender, fatty meat. The braised and mixed dishes come in American dishes like broccoli and beef, but the more authentic dishes hold up to consistency. Best to go or order in large groups, when safe, to enjoy Chinese style feast.

I come here for my dim sum. The parking lot can get quite busy as this is a popular place for Sunday dim sum. They have a wide selection of options ranging from noodles to dumplings to dessert. The servers can be a bit slow on filling your water but the carry ladies are excellent in selling what they have in their cart without being too pushy. At the end they tally up your stamps and give you your bill price. I would highly recommend coming here for dim sum. They are located upstairs. If you see a koi tank, you're in the right place. They also host weddings here as well. The food is delicious.

I come here often as it's a place where my group of friends tends to meet whenever we're in the mood for dim sum. Just be aware that the weekend does get a little out of control. The bigger the group, it can be longer of a wait. But I've seen groups of 3 waiting as long as a big group. You check in downstairs with the hostess and a number is given. Basically wait for your number to be called before heading upstairs to be greeted by another hostess before shown to your seat. There's two main room, the left side is a smaller room And the right side is main common side. Basically the larger and busier side. Left side tends to take a while with the ladies walking around with the dim sum carts. But you could start off with the dishes on the menu. The ladies walk around just like any dim sum spot. You pick and choose which dishes are on their tray. Also ladies walking around with dishes, the shrimp and walnut, Chinese broccoli are the main ones that seems to be going around. What I did notice this time was ladies walking around with a cart of alcohol. Basically beer, but this was the first time I've seen it going on. Prices on the dishes did go up slightly. As you may know, each dishes are based on letters, A, B,C, D and so on. A being the cheapest and it goes high from there. Most dishes tend to be on the B and C plates about 4.00 or 5.00 a plate. Plenty of ladies walking around with the carts so you'll be likely to get plenty of food pretty fast.

Standard dimsum in Chinatown if you don't want to go all the way to SGV. It's a large restaurant on the second floor of a plaza between Broadway and Hill but fills up quickly on Sunday mornings. They open at 930am on Sunday and was pretty full by the time I finished at 11am. it's cart style which I appreciate. I know people like the ordering off the menu style nowadays because it's supposedly more "fresh" but you don't have to worry about freshness when the turnover of the food in the carts is quick! They have all the usual - har gow, siu mai (choose from chicken or pork!), cheurng fun (rice rolls), law mai gai (lotus wrapped sticky rice), cha siew bao (bbq pork buns), etc. However, Ocean also has some different and unique items too if you're in the mood to try something new which I like. I'm all about the dimsum classics but sometimes it's nice to get something different, ya know? They have these different types of dumplings, different pastries and desserts, etc. It's a fun experience! Also, they do try to cater to non-Chinese customers, with English menus and also some of the dimsum ladies know how to say some things in English but obviously much easier when you go with someone who can speak Chinese (hit me up if you need a dimsum buddy! ;) ). There is also a huge parking lot (valet only) so you don't have to worry about driving around in circles looking for parking in Chinatown (which I assure you is a nightmare) - it's $3 for 2 hours with validation so make sure you get validation when you get the check. The valet parking is cash only I believe though but they do take credit card at the restaurant. I would say the only downside is probably the price. It is probably one of the more pricier dimsum places in Chinatown but I guess you pay for the ambiance and slightly higher quality of food. Service is also not bad (you just need to flag down a waiter/busser if you need something). They are pretty quick to get what you need though. Overall, not a bad place to get dimsum in Chinatown! P.S. I've also ordered catering here before so if you're looking for dinner party trays to pick up for your next potluck/dinner party, you can do that too! Like the dimsum, food is good and they've always had it ready for the time I needed the food by, just slightly pricy.

I love going to dimsum: You get the convenience and choices of a full-service restaurant, with the added bonus of being able to see what you're ordering BEFORE it arrives at your table. The ladies here are very quick to surround you as soon as you are shown to your table. I have been several times and I have only ever seen this place almost full once. Although there is a paid parking lot below, I have never had any problems finding metered parking in the surrounding streets. Ocean Seafood is located on the 2nd Floor. One time, there were lion dancers too!

Ocean Seafood has long been my go-to spot for dim sum in Chinatown. Primarily because you can always count on a tasty, hassle-free meal in a pretty cool environment. All of the traditional dim sum selections are offered, including tasty versions of shumai, har gow, xiaolongbao, wonton, in all different varieties and flavors. They also have other offerings like bok choi and dessert options such as sweet buns. If you want to walk on the wild side, you might also find chicken feet to try. I'm no dim sum connoisseur so I can't be more specific than that, but suffice to say every time I've visited here, with friends and/or family, everyone has left full and satisfied. Dim sum selections are made from the four or five different carts that are continuously circulating around the dining room between the tables. The carts have different 'themes,' with some serving sweeter options, with others serving steamed options. You also get water and hot tea with the meal. One great thing about Ocean Seafood is that it has enough capacity to handle the crowds during the extremely busy times, as well as the not so busy times. So you can expect quick and easy service, and plenty of food to choose from with relatively little time to wait. The only real issue with this location is the parking - there isn't really any free parking to speak of (it is downtown LA after all) and the lot adjacent to it can cost up to $7 to park in during the weekend. Four solid stars. I'm looking forward to my next visit!
